Slade  is drawn to the water like a magnet, yet refuses to board ships over  it. He stays where he can still see the sand. He carries a  mirror-compass in his pockets, seems obsessed with his appearance.  Though if you grow to know him, it begins to feel as if it's not quite  out of vanity...he checks obsessively, almost as if checking he's still  the same.
