Star Mapping

The void outside of the Halo’s Pierce portholes is vast, terrifyingly so for some, but for Hubble, its deep hues, swirling with far off galaxies and sparkling with countless stars, is home. Peering into it is incredible, and about the only thing he finds solace in up on the station. Hubble’s reputation is one of wariness, his face constantly downturned into a sour frown, one of which he always tries to insist just denoted he is focused. Often he is; focused on space, mapping it, and uncovering every secret that it holds.

His curiosity was reignited after a mysterious craft had passed through Halo’s Pierce airspace some weeks back, and immediately he had set to work on identifying it and its destination. His clearance was not nearly high enough to garner information from his superiors, but Hubble was a gravent, and he was a determined one at that. Any rumor around the station typically wafted its way towards his ears, and his dwelling in the rafters helped exponentially; the echo of voices on metal had a tendency to carry.

MYO Gravent 2

A Nautipod, aided by another on the Spire down below had gotten her hands on a ship, headed towards the broken moon of Ofae. Hubble had seen another ship pass by once before, managing to break free of Ofae and return safely to Skire below, though like now the reason is unbeknownst to Hubble

In reality, his job was to map, plot the coordinates of every star and every celestial body that surrounds Eeridi, and while he loved the job, it was difficult to turn his attention away from Ofae and whatever this mounting interest in the moon meant. He had noticed the odd shimmers each time orbits passed, hints of water encircling the moon that disappeared as quickly as they’d come.

Official Gravent 1

As quickly as his hairbrained ideas and desires manifest, they pass, but Hubble had one plastered on the to-do list of his mind for some time now. He needed to map, but his angles were limited, many of the accessible telescopes automated or preoccupied. Help was terribly needed, but he knew unfortunately that his superiors did not care much to give it to him. The more of his work he could outsource, the more time he could spend observing Ofae’s strange behavior. Hubble tapped his pencil to his chin, momentarily attempting to talk himself out of the idea. It was so tempting, and Hubble knew just the CCCat to assist.

Hubble pulls out his radio, a ramshackle thing with more than a couple frayed wires. Hopefully it would pull itself together enough to contact Erion.

“Erion, do you copy?” - Hubble

“Hubble? You startled me. I copy.” - Erion

“Perfect. I’ve got a downlink for you from Pierce, I'm needing some hands to wrap this project up.”

“Go on, I’m interested.”

“You think you folks on terra firma can do some mappin for me? The goal’s to get the perfect map of Skire’s sky, everything in it. But I'm only one guy with one telescope, you know?”

“I think I could get you some hands. How many?”

“All you can eat, pal, I want as many as you can find.”

“Hm… difficult… and uh, odd phrasing… but doable. I know another Grav who can get your message out there.”

“Put me through?”

“Reporting in, the one and only!” - Scoop

“Heyo, Scoop? I dunno who you are but I heard you can put a message out there?”

“Could you get me all hands on deck? I'm looking to map Skire’s sky from the ground, get a real handle on what’s going on up there that I might be missing. I need however many folks you can get me on the ground, makin’ maps, stargazing, whatever.”

“Hmm… I'll put out a broadcast for you, pal! Whatever your name is?”

“Hubble, good to meet ya.”

“Good to meet ya too, buddy! I’ll record you a broadcast and get you in Skire’s airwaves faster than you can blink!”

“And… She’s gone.”

Chat Bubble 3

Hubble flips the dial on his television, static buzzing to life and bringing up Skire’s premiere channel, quite grainy, but enough to see Scoop’s face pop up on screen. Sitting up in space never had great reception.

“Callin all art-inclined Skirites: Halo’s Pierce is looking for mappers! Anyone who can map the skies above our beloved continent! Gaze into the wonders that are our spaces, and draw what you see! Send your drawings to the nearest mailbox… or… something… We’ll get ‘em where they gotta go! Just address ‘em to Hubble!”

Hubble squints for a moment, questioning her method of gathering such important documents, but like any gravent, he trusted her to get it done. Her face, awkwardly posed, blinked off the screen as confused news anchors apologized for the blip in their broadcast. Hubble tries not to question Scoop’s methods, turning back to his scope and falling into place observing the Halo and its moons.
